Description: The distribution of stars in the inner parsec of our Galaxy is puzzling, which raises the question: what are the most important dynamical processes that have shaped the centres of the Milky Way and other galaxies? In these lectures we develop the topic of stellar dynamics around supermassive black holes, starting from the Newtonian two-body problem of undergraduate mechanics and working up towards the collective dynamical processes that occur in nuclear stellar clusters.

Description: Stellar dynamics proceeds in two stages. Stage I involves building models that are in statistical equilibrium in the sense that as their constituent particles move around, particles essentially swap places, leaving the model’s large-scale structure invariant. That is, Stage I focuses on mean-field theory. Stage II is concerned with understanding how fluctuations in the gravitational field that holds a model together drive the model’s long-term evolution.
